Biography
Roel was born in 1904. He is the son of Marten Dijkstra and Geertje Schippers.
When Roel married Trientje, as a young man, he was working as a farm hand, and they grew their young family as farmers.
The world then entered WWII and Roel fought in the Dutch resistance. Following the war he immigrated with his wife, Trientje Pietens and their five children to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada where many descendants remain today.
In later years, when reflecting on their move, Trientje related that they could no longer look at their home the same way, and that they both wanted to leave the horrors of the war far behind.
