Biography

Mary was born about 1701.

The 1729 will of Elizabeth Marston Duke, wife of Thomas Duke, provides for her son Marston Duke, her daughter Susanna Sherman, her granddaughter Elizabeth Sherman, daughter Sarah Lide, and daughter Mary Duke. Marston Duke and William Brown of James City County were executors, and the will was witnessed by Robert Hickman, Joseph Hix, and Joseph Day.[1]

Mary Duke married John Crawford. Mary's sister Sarah had married John Lide prior to the date of the will. John and Sarah Lide migrated to North Carolina, where they lived in Northampton County.

The Crawfords moved to South Carolina, taking with them Robert Lide, son of John Lide and Sarah Duke Lide. John and Sarah Lide’s sons, John, Thomas, and Robert, were among the prominent early settlers of the Cheraws in South Carolina. They settled at Sandy Bluff, where John Crawford's brother Michael was a merchant.[2] The Lide family plantation in North Carolina was left to Robert Lide and land records in Northampton County (formerly Bertie County) document the sale in 1755 of the "Manner Plantation" By Robert Lide of Craven County, SC.

In 1767/68, Thomas Lide is twice listed as lessee to Thomas Crawford and his wife (Charleston Deeds, Book G-3, 579 and 584).[3]

In 1772-73, Michael Crawford is listed as lessor and Thomas Lide as lessee (Charleston Deeds, Book B-4, 489), while in 1778 John Crawford is listed as lessor and John Lide as lessee (Charleston Deeds, Book Y-4, 143).[4]

Thomas Lide and Thomas Crawford were commissioners of St. David’s Parish, SC, in 1768. The minutes of the parish vestry record letters to William Watkins and Robert Lide, and in the parish election of 27 February 1769 those voting included John Crawford, Thomas Lide, Robert Lide, and John Bruce (the Bruce surname appears in other contexts related to the Duke(s) family). Duke-1849 and Duke-1822 appear to represent the same person because: I'm quite certain these are the same people.
