Martha was born in 1849. She was the daughter of George Elliott and Mary Buckwell.

1871 Census Martha (aged 21 years) was living at Hartfield, Sussex with her parents George Augustus (73), Mary (55) and sisters Caroline (23), and Fanny (11).
