William Stevenson Fairlie was born in 1819 in Glasgow[1], the second child of Thomas Fairlie and Margaret Thyne.
In 1851, William married Jane Swanson Kirkwood [2] in Glasgow. William and Jane had eight children together and lived in the Anderston area of Glasgow [3].
William was involved in a number of businesses relating to the manufacture of cotton goods:
William was in business for a time with Alex Moore, shown in the 1850 - 51 Post Office directory for Glasgow[7]:
DOIG & Co., power-loom manufacturers, Rothesay. Orders and letters left with Fairlie and Moore, 49 Miller street.
Fairlie & Moore, drysalters, commission merchants, and agents for the National Fire and Life Insurance Co. of Scotland, 49 Miller street.
After this, he was involved with Downie & McClure. William was also an Agent for the Scottish National Insurance Company[8]. By 1871, he had gone into business with his brother, Alexander, under the name A & W Fairlie, Mill Furnishers and Cotton Work Merchants. The 1870 - 71 PO Directory shows[9]:
