Biography

I was born in Bridgeport, Wise, Texas on October 25, 1956.I am the daughter of James Garrett and Arvella Brawley. [1]

My love of genealogy started when my grandmother passed away. I wanted a way to honor her and make sure that she would always be remembered by her descendants. Equally important to me was my grandfather who had passed several years before her so I started my research into both lines with a realization that not all family trees have accurate information and that they were being repeatedly copied from one person to the next without a clue that the information was not correct. This only solidified with me the importance of actual sources to confirm what we do or do not know to be true. While we may not find all our answers, it is my belief that we can at least lay a factual foundation for those who come after us.[2]

DNA

My mtDNA haplogoup is H6a1b4.

Arvella Brawley, my mother, has taken autosomal DNA tests at 23andme and at Ancestry along with me, Sharon Garrett Glover. We share 3457 cm's along 28 chromosomes which confirms our biological relationship as mother and daughter.

Good morning. Exit 43 on I-26 in Tennessee is an area known as Temple Hill and where Granny Lewis Creek flows into the South Indian Creek which is where the William Lewis Massacre took place in 1793. In the book "In the Shadow of Big Bald" by Pat Alderman, the creek is named after the kidnapped daughter of William Lewis who was eventually returned. This would be Mary (Lewis) Rigby https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lewis-34471.

I live about 7 miles from there the way the crow flies in a mountain community named Wold Laurel and we also have a road named Granny Lewis Ln, but no one seems to know the origin of the name. Any evidence within your notes that that they are the same. My skepticism is based on the historical title of Granny typically goes with a name that sticks and that would more likely make her Granny Rigby instead of Lewis.

Thanks, Tim Carrigan

William Elgate, Jr. and Sarah Keene

The Byrd samples show DNA matches with descendants of William Elgate Jr. and Sarah Keene of Somerset (now Wicomico) Co., likely through their daughter Sarah Elgate who was known to be the wife of Thomas Byrd.
