Samuel was born circa 1650 in Weymouth, Massachusetts. Bay Colony. He was the son of William and Elizabeth (Pitts) Holbrook.
Samuel was born about 1650 to William Holbrook and Elizabeth Pitts. The 1650 birth date see original written death record [1], death October 29, 1719. Age 69 at death would make his birth about 1650.
The January 24,1642/3 date is based on his death record (see below)[1] Note there are two deaths listed on this page for Samuel Oct 29, 1712 and Oct 29, 1719.
Note there were two men named Samuel Holbrook living at the same time. The son of John married Lydia. This is clear because both his son Samuel Holbrook and his wife Lydia are mentioned in John's will.[2] Therefore the Samuel who married Mary Pierce must be the son of William by process of elimination. However, this seems to be confused often on Internet sites.
Samuel married Mary Pierce on June 23, 1675 in Medfield, Norfolk County. Their first child, Persis, was born in 1676 in Weymouth. Therefore, Persis's birth location infers that Weymouth may have been where Samuel and Mary married.
Torrey shows his marriage to Mary Pierce with Peris being the first child born in 1675 ("HOLBROOK, Samuel (?1644, 1643-1712, ae 69) & Mary Pierce (-1735); 23 Jun 1675, had Persis 1676, at Weymouth; Medfield/Hingham/Scituate/?Weymouth") [3] [4]
In 1643, the year Samuel was born, as many as forty (40) families left Weymouth reducing the population to 900. William Holbrook and family were part of the population of settlers who remained. Twenty years later, William removed to Mendon, until he was driven out during King Philip's War. He spent his last years in Scituate. Within 5 years and by 1681, however, Samuel and family were residing in Scituate, which is known because he recorded ownership of animals on January 12, 1681 in Scituate town records.
After 20 years and by 1663, Samuel's father, William, had removed from Weymouth to Mendon, and then later relocated to Scituate after being driven from Mendon as a result of King Philip's War. This is to say, that with William's sequence of residences, Samuel would have been born in Weymouth, not Mendon.
This is an incomplete list of children:
His will is dated 20 October 1718 in Scituate and proved 10 November 1719 in Plymouth. He mentions his wife Mary, and his children, Persis Farrow, Elizabeth Winslow, Mary Daniels, Samuel Holbrook, and his granddaughter, Bethiah Winslow, his grandsons, Nathaniel Winslow, David Daniels, John Farrow, His inventory was taken on 13 November 1719. He was a slaveholder and bequeathed his enslaved black woman named Durance to his wife Mary, and his inventory included an unnamed enslaved black man, and "one apprentice boy's time". [5]
1) More evidence is needed to prove this Samuel bx. 1657 in Mendon d?1712? son of Capt. William Holbrook is the father of Samuel b. 1683 of Scituate. This is implied in The Vinton Memorial by John Adams Vinton and Scituate records.
