Biography

Elizabeth was born 16 Oct 1872 at Kirkland Villa, Bellahouston, Govan. She was the second daughter of Robert Holms, a stockbroker, and Margaret Ralston. ^{[1] [2]}

She was the third of 6 children (two of whom sadly died in infancy). Shortly after her birth her father, a keen yachtsman, acquired a property on the shoreline at Largs, Ayrshire, called Underbank ^[3] and the family split their time between there and 23 Park Circus, Glasgow. At the time of the 1891 census, she and her older sister are at the Park Circus address in Glasgow with their parents. ^[4]

In 1897, her sister Margaret married Harry Hope, ^[5] and it was possibly that relationship which allowed Elizabeth to meet Harry's elder brother John Deans Hope, who also happened to be a stockbroker like her father. The Hope family lived on the east side of the country and the following May, her father took up temporary residence at Dunsinnan House, Perthshire. ^[6] It was shortly after the following New Year that Elizabeth became engaged to John Deans Hope. ^[7] The wedding took place at The Park Church in Glasgow on 29 Mar 1899. ^[8]

The young couple initially set up home at Ashfield House, Dunbar, East Lothian where they were shown in the 1901 census with a son, William. ^[9] A daughter Margaret Lois followed 2 years later. ^[10] By 1910, the family are living at Bellevue, Haddington, East Lothian and it is here that Elizabeth hosts a meeting of the suffragette movement, showing her affiliation with the cause. Her husband had been the elected MP for West Fife since 1900. ^[11]

In the 1920s she made a couple of transatlantic trips accompanied by her daughter Margaret who seemed to be attending college at Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania there. ^{[12] [13]}

Her husband died in Dec 1949 and Elizabeth died on 9 Jul 1954 at Bellevue. ^[14] She was buried in the local churchyard at St Mary's, Haddington.
