Margaret Hope (1903-2000) known as Lois, was born in Edinburgh on 27 Jun 1903.

She was the daughter of John Hope and Elizabeth Holms-Kerr.
When she was little, her family moved to Bellevue, Haddington, East Lothian.
Accompanied by her mother, Lois made several transatlantic trips in the 1920s to attend Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania as a student.

On 2 Jul 1929 she married John Alfred Valentine Butler at St Mary, Haddington.

By summer 1939, they have 3 children and her husband gets a post as a lecturer at Princeton University in New Jersey for a year so the family travels to America aboard the Queen Mary.

When war breaks out in Europe the following month, they are stranded there.
Sometime after his post expires, her husband obtains work at the British Supply Council in North America and the family are living at 4620 Norwood Drive, Chevy Chase, Montgomery, Maryland.

They are able to return to the UK in Jun 1944 travelling aboard the "Rangitiki" to Liverpool, and return to Bellevue, Haddington initially.

Sometime before 1962, they move to Nightingale Corner, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire.

This is still their address when her husband John died, although the death was recorded in Chelsea, London.

Lois herself died in 2000 in the Watford registration district.
