Robert James was born on 9 March 1884 in Aghafad, Plumbridge, County Tyrone, Ireland, son of William George Hughey and Sarah Curry. ^{[1] [2]}

On 14 November 1905 at Donaghedy parish church, he married Annette (Annie) Elizabeth McKane of Glennagoorland, daughter of William McKane, carpenter. Witnessed by Jane and Frederick G. Forbes. At this time he lived at Rousky. ^[3]
