On 14 November 1905 at Donaghedy parish church, he married Annette (Annie) Elizabeth McKane of Glennagoorland, daughter of William McKane, carpenter. Witnessed by Jane and Frederick G. Forbes. At this time he lived at Rousky.

The family emigrated to Christchurch, New Zealand aboard the Pakeha sailed 9 December 1920. The passengers were recorded as: Robert (35, farmhand), Mrs. (34), Margaret (13), Sarah (11), William (8), Ellen (4), David (1).
