Obituary from Dayton Review October 5, 1911
The passing of Nicholas Kitt takes away another of Webster County's pioneer heroes from this vicinity. He was born near Springfield, Ohio, August 28, 1819, and died on his old homestead in Burnside township north of town September 26, 1911, aged 92 years, 28 days. His boyhood was spent at the place of his birth, from whence he removed in early manhood to Noble County, Indiana. He was there married to Miss Elizabeth Childs September 6, 1849, living happily with her until her death, July 30, 1888. They moved to Marion County, Iowa, in 1854, coming from there to this county in 1856, and pre-empting the old homestead, where both lived until their death. From their union were born four children, two sons and two daughters. Two sons survive and were present at his funeral. He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren. His funeral was held from the home last Thursday afternoon, Rev. Pinckney conducting the services, and his remains laid beside those of his wife in Dayton cemetery.
As one of the early settlers of this region, Mr. Kitt did his share in the development of this region's prosperity. We knew him from boyhood as a neighbor and friend of our parents, and his life was always one of integrity. Bluff in measure, and outspoken, yet ever ready to give assistance in case of need. Many a time have we taken care of the straw behind his old threshing machine in our boyhood days, and our father could always say, "He did a good job." Though feeble the past few years of his life as age grew upon him, yet he always held a lively interest in the incidents of life, and was always happy in reminiscence over his early days in this state and Indiana. He has done well his share; may the rewards of the faithful be his throughout eternity as he deserves. We join a host of lifelong friends and neighbors in extending sympathy to the bereaved family in their hour of sorrow.
