Biography

Pauline was born in the Armory Park neighborhood of Tucson in Arizona Territory, October 16, 1906. She began spending summers in Soldier Camp in the Catalina mountains in 1910 and until at the age of 90, she could no longer handle the altitude, never missed a summer. The family started out camping and then had platform tents until her father and friends built a cabin in 1920. (It's now one of the oldest structures on the mountain).

She began her education in the original Safford Elementary School building, which had to be torn down right after she graduated because of structural damage from an earthquake in the 1890's. She then went to Tucson High School (the building is now Roskruge K-8 Magnet School), graduating in 1924. She was captain of the girls basketball team and tennis team and an enthusiastic dancer and follies participant. After high school, she joined her mother and older brother at the University of Arizona, majoring in education and Spanish. There, she met her future husband, Norman Sterling Hull. They graduated and married in 1928. They moved in to one of the first two houses built in the historic Monte Video neighborhood. They spent a summer in Prescott. Norman's corporate law practice took them to Phoenix about 1930. Their three children were born in Tucson, even though she had to make special trips for two of them. About 1940, they moved into one of the first air conditioned houses in Phoenix. During the war, in addition to tending her "Victory Garden," she volunteered typing texts in braille and with disabled children. Norman and Pauline returned to Tucson in 1954 when he accepted a position teaching law at the University of Arizona, (where their youngest had just graduated). The "Travel Bug" bit when they visited their middle child on a medical internship in Hawaii. They had memorable trips, visiting every continent except Antarctica, with Europe and England (land of her father's birth) the particular favorites.

Unfortunately, as they got on in years, she and Norman began bickering and separated when he chose to move into a retirement community and she wouldn't go. They sold the house to a neighbor and split the proceeds, she then rented it back from the neighbor. They divorced a year later (two days after their 67th wedding anniversary), but never stopped loving each other. A loving caregiver was hired soon after her 90th birthday. When her funds ran low, she moved with the caregiver to Green Valley, Arizona. She passed away in 2004, on what would have been Norman's 100th birthday. She was buried with him in Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson Arizona. Her parents, brother, paternal grandparents and other relatives are nearby.

Pauline was mentioned on a memorial in Evergreen Memorial Park, Tucson, Pima County, Arizona, United States with a death date of 3 February 2004.[1]
