Hon. Georgiana Liddell was born on 13 April 1822 [1] at 51 Portland Place, Marylebone, London, England. She was sixteenth and youngest child of Thomas Henry Liddell, first Baron Ravensworth, by his wife Marion Susannah, daughter of John Simpson of Bradley Hall, co. Durham.
She was educated at home, and in December 1841 became maid of honour to Queen Victoria, resigning in July 1845. [2]
Georgiana married John Arthur Douglas Bloomfield, (20 years senior to Georgiana) the 1st Baron Bloomfield of Ciamhaltha, son of Lt.-Gen. Benjamin Bloomfield, 1st Baron Bloomfield of Oakhampton and Redwood and Harriott Douglas, on 4 September 1845 at Lamesley Chapel, County Durham, England. [3]This marriage provided her the title of Honourable Georgiana Liddell - Baroness Bloomfield of Oakhampton and Redwood. Her title was officiated on the 15 August 1846. [4]. She was also styled as Baroness Bloomfield of Ciamhaltha on 7 August 1871. Prior to her marriage, Georgiana held the office of Maid of Honour between 1841 and 1845. [5]
There were no children of the marriage, and after her husband's death at his residence, Newport, co. Tipperary, in 1879, Lady Bloomfield settled at Shrivenham, in Berkshire, to be near her sister, Jane Elizabeth, widow of the sixth Viscount Barrington. When Lady Barrington died on 22 March 1883, Lady Bloomfield removed to Bramfield House, about two miles from Hertford. Here she exercised much hospitality and interested herself in the affairs of the village.
In 1883 Georgiana published a book[6]a constant ripple of interesting anecdote, as Augustus J. C. Hare described Lady Bloomfield's conversation (cf. Story of My Life, 1900, vol. vi.). [7]Georgiana was to write a book titled Reminiscences of Court and Diplomatic Life [8] which was published 1883. She was an accomplished pianist and water colour artist.
Georginana also edited in 1884 a Memoir by her father in law, Lord Benjamin Bloomfield, [9]. The book was in 2 volumes.
Her last work, Gleanings of a Long Life (1902) contained collected extracts from her favourite books. [10]
Lady Bloomfield, a grand dame of an old school, kept up her friendship with Queen Victoria and her family, and delighted in social intercourse with all classes. While deeply religious on old, low church lines, she was tolerant and charitable. She founded in 1874 the Trained Nurses' Annuity Fund, [11] and built and endowed almshouses on her husband's estate near Newport, co. Tipperary.
Georgiana died, after a long illness, at Bramfield House on 21 May 1905, at age 83 and was buried on the 26 May 1905 at Loughton, COuntry Tipperary, Ireland in the family mausoleum beside her husband in the churchyard of Borrisnafarney, King's County, Ireland. [12] Contray sources say she died at her family home at Ciamhaltha near Newport; (Georgianna died at her home Ciamhaltha near Newport, County Tipperary, Ireland in 1905. Her husband John Arthur Douglas, Bloomfield 2nd Baron Bloomfield; was buried in his family's vault at Borrisnafarney Parish Church, beside the Loughton Demense and Moneygall, in County Offaly.) An impressive memorial exists in the church in his memory[13]
Her Will was valued at at over £58,000.[14]
