Biography

James was born in 1897. James Longstreet Brielle, Monmouth, NJ ... James writes Mar 11, 1897 as his birthdate in h his employment record for Warner Swasey, he used this date for his draft card during WWI, When he was roughly 13, his mother sent him to live with his aunt in East Orange City, New Jersey due to issues at home with his dad. James became a leading expert on turret lathes. He maintained his skills later in life using a Shopsmith [1].

James was a senior engineer at Warner and Swasey in Cleveland, Ohio. [2]

In the early sixties (1960's), James and Rupert corresponded on a genealogy of the Langestraet family (Longstreet)

In 1910, there were some problems on the home front and James was sent to live with his aunt (Rebecca's sister - Isadora, possibly). At the time, James was 8 years younger than Ralph, his next eldest sibling, and the rest of his family had moved out of the house. Ralph was 21 at the time.

He passed away in 1965 In Bradenton Florida. He is buried in the Village Cemetery, Rehoboth, Mass. next to his son, James Jr.[3]

Marriage

James was tutoring Lillian Simpson who was a student at Radcliff in 1918. Her math skills were not the best and he decided she could not be taught math. In frustration, he left her his math exam. Lillian had a gift for memorization and as it turned out, the exam he left behind was the one she was given at Radcliffe. She passed the class with an A. It was soon afterward that they were married.

James wrote a book on lathes which can be found at the Minnesota University library collection. He authored of "Turret lath operator's manual" (1952 - initial publication 1940) [8] [9]

His daughter, Ane, initially submitted the book to the University of Wisconsin at Madison. [10]

Overseas Travel

James won an Engineering award (ASME) and flew with his wife to Paris (10 Nov 1938) to be awarded with the honor.
