Military

United Empire Loyalyst. Proof of Loyalty : 1817 SUE land grant to son Gilbert Markle.

William's Markle's land petition was filed in 1794 and he was granted 1,000 acres in Ancaster. Extensive searches have failed to turn up the petition itself; the closest we can come is a copy of the Executive Council meeting minute confirming the grant which makes no mention of Loyalist status and his name does not appear on the old UE list. After still more searching, however, we have been successful in locating the SUE petition for William's son Gilbert, which does clearly identify his father as a Loyalist.

Marriage

Wilhelmus Merkel may have married Agnes Thorn.
