Biography

Shelby Matherly was a farmer and didn;t serve in The Civil War as well as his sons. He was a little too old and had to many children to take care of. The Matherlys seem to have immagrated into Virgina and North Carolina in the Colonial Days. There was an extensive search on birth's and marriages and all of the early ones were from those 2 states. He may have had a sister or cousin named Arzila that were about the same age. His parents are unknown at this time but they are suspected of being born in Virginia,

Shelby and or Redecca Waldron must have been writting to each other or family in Kentucky because within a year or two after Martha's death he married 17 year old Rebecca back in Estill County, kentucky on the 4th of July 1854. Someone skimmed 3 years off of his age on the 1860 Census. Not disapproving but I thought this was unusual, Edward Pike
