Biography

John Middleton Jr was born in Virginia.

John William Jr was born August 28, 1878 in Rockbridge County, Virginia, United States. He was the son of John Middleton and Jennie Figgatt. In 1901 he went west to seek his fortune and worked a short time in a mine in Cripple Creek, Colorado, then moved on to California to attend the University of California Dental College. After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, where he lost several friends, he and his brother Burgess decided to open a general store in Clairville, California. Clairville was later abandoned in 1907 when the Western Pacific Railroad bypassed the town, so the brothers opened a general store in Beckworth, California. Several years later desert land in Nevada was opened up for sale, and John moved to Fernley, Nevada and operated an automobile garage. In 1936 he left the business world and began a full-time Protestant ministry as an ordained minister in Janesville, California, where he and members of his small congregation built the log church in Janesville, and he was the pastor there until his passing. ^[1]

He married Catherine Hoffman in 1910 ^[2] and they had three children, a girl, Gertrude, and two boys, John William III and Clinton Earl. The boys were out hunting and both drowned when the ice on a river they were crossing broke and they fell into the water. ^[1]

John and Catherine had divorced, and in 1920 John married Jennie Clara LeMay in Yeringon, Nevada, and they had three children, Mary Lee, and twins, Bob and Lois. ^[1] He died in Janesville, Lassen, California on May 31, 1939 at the age of 60 from complications of diabetes, and was buried in Whispering Pines Cemetery, Beckwoth, Plumas, California. ^[3]
