Biography

Zachariah was a Friend (Quaker)

Origins

No definitive primary source documents for the parentage of this Zachariah Moorman have ever been located. Researcher Lorraine Keith has assembled considerable primary source records from monthly meeting minutes, land records and deeds, and elsewhere which may be found here. They are too voluminous for this profile. She postulates that in all probability this Zachariah Moorman is the son of Andrew Moorman who was baptized 1689 in New Kent, Virginia. Researcher Patti Smith Lamb, research may be found here, does not come to the conclusion that there is a relationship between this Zachariah and Andrew of New Kent. No probate record for that Andew Moorman has ever been located.

Zachariah Moorman is believed born about 1742 (some believe 1732) at Orange County (Cane Creek Monthly Meeting), North Carolina.

Zachariah's Wife Mary _______________

There is currently no known documentation establishing the maiden name of Zachariah's wife Mary. She is frequently seen as Mary Matthews based upon a Cane Creek Monthly Meeting entry from 1774 (7th of the fifth month), "Mary Moreman, formerly Matthews, married out of unity." Unfortunately the entry does not contain the name of the husband, it is possible she married a different Moorman, she could have been a widow Matthews, and most importantly Zachariah and his wife Mary are known to be married as early as April 1770 based upon their joint signature of a deed in Anson County for the sale of 300 acres to Archilus Moorman. Additionally, two of Zachariah's children, Edward ad Mary, are documented as born before the date Mary Matthews was reported to have married out of unity.

It is sometimes seen that Zachariah had a first wife named Sarah Hall. This is a misread of deed records in Anson County explained here

Movements of the Family

Zachariah and Mary Moorman lived in various locations of Anson and Richmond[1] counties of North Carolina (Richmond was formed from Anson in 1779). Records indicate they lived in the area of Deep River Monthly Meeting (western Guilford County, North Carolina) from 1794 until sometime after 1798. They then appear in Marlboro County, South Carolina in the 1800 census[2] and Piney Grove Monthly Meeting minutes.

In 1811 Piney Grove Monthly Meeting granted certificates to a monthly meeting in Ohio. The next record of the family finds transfer certificates from Ohio to the Whitewater Monthly Meeting in Wayne County, Indiana in February of 1812.[3] Other than marriage records for a child, this is the last appearance of Zachariah or Mary in the Whitewater Meeting minutes. Their deaths are not recorded in the surviving minutes.

Research Notes

See Extended Research Notes at this free space page.

Obviously the Moorman's lived in Marlborough Dist of SC at some point. These marriage records would indicate the Census records on this profile are for the correct Zachariah Moorman of which there are several very easily confused. Other records show Moorman family in the Pee Dee Meeting House (organized 1755) region where the border between NC and SC was not settled until 1764, at least officially. Zachariah Moorman is believed a member of Pee Dee MM for some time. Piney Grove MM in Marlborough Dist SC was to the south of the Pee Dee Meeting which was about 5 miles north of the border (depending on the year and whose idea of the border was being accepted).

25 Mar 1802 Mary Moorman, dau of Zachariah and Mary Moorman of Marlborough Dist SC, married Obadiah Harris. [4] Piney Grove MM

23 Oct 1806 Benjamin Thomas, son of John and Molly Thomas, Marlborough Dist SC married Ann Moorman, dau of Zachariah and Mary Moorman, Marlborough Dist, SC[5] Piney Grove MM

20 Nov 1806 Uriah Moorman, son of Zachariah & Mary Moorman, Marlborough District SC, married Hannah Mendenhall dau of Stephen and Elizabeth Mendenhall, Richmond Co NC[6] Piney Grove MM

A collection of articles on genealogy found in the Indianapolis Star contains mention that this Zachariah Moorman died 30 Jan 1815 in North Carolina but the writer does not state the source of the information[7] and he is documented in Indiana in 1812 (this does not preclude a return to North Carolina).

Moorman-1011 and Moorman-272 appear to represent the same person because: These are the same person. Differences in dates need to be resolved. Between the 2 profiles all 3 children are known children of him. Working on additional sourcing. I suspect he is descended from the Quaker Moorman's in Virginia but records are very thin.
