99 DESCENDANTS (1928, August 30). The Gundagai Independent (NSW : 1928 - 1939), p. 2. Retrieved from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article130882156 99 DESCENDANTS DEATH OF TUMBLONG MAN Mr. James Neve, an old resident of Tumblong, passed away on Sunday last, after a very short illness, at the great age of 88 years. He left a family of four sons and two daughters, viz., Messrs. George, James Turner, Edward, Chard and Albert; Charlotte Louisa (deceased), and Eliza Emma; also thirty-seven grand-children and 56 great-grandchildren, all of whom are living. His sister, Eliza, is the only surviving one of the family of five. Deceased was born at Camden, on August 14th, 1840. In the year 1850 he travelled with his parents to Albury, and in 1860 they came to Adelong and worked there on the goldfield. Going to Tumblong (then called Adelong Crossing) in 1862,deceased purchased land and made his home on it. He was married in the year 1864 to Miss Turner, sister of Mr. James Turner, the old veteran of Tumblong. Deceased took an active part in everything that was carried out at Tumblong, such as the building of the school, the Church, the public hall, and cemetery (he was sexton for over 50 years) The late Mr. Neve was a great worker in the early days, especially in farming pursuits, when there was no machinery to do the work with. It was quite a usual thing for him to pull the old reaping hook from 4 a.m. until 11 o'clock at night. There being no money at the time to pay labor, the work had to be done by himself. Deceased led an honorable life all through, and was never known to do an injury to anyone, and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone requiring assistance. His wife predeceased him some 26 years ago and he lived on in his old home, under the care of his sons and daughters, until death called him away, a few days after his 88th birthday. His remains were placed to rest beside those of his wife in the Tumblong cemetery. The Rev. S. G. Davis of Gundagai, officiated at the graveside, in the presence of a large assemblage of mourners.
