Note

Note: Lawrence was the fifth of seven children born to Thomas and Salome (Kaeffer) Pelling. He was raised on the family farm in Lisle on Rt. 53. It is not certain where he attended school, but at the age of 13 he received his First Holy Communion at Naperville, Illinois. He worked on his father's farm as indicated in the 1880 cencus. Before he was married, he had a meat market in Willow Springs, Illinois. This is where he met his wife, Hilda Lewin. Their first child, Clara, was born in Willow Springs, but then a fire destroyed the meat market.
In 1898 Lawrence bought out his brothers and sisters interest in the Pelling estate and moved to the farm in Lisle, where three more children were born. Around 1910 the old farm house was in need of repair, so Lawrence purchased additional farm land from the Galls and moved his family across the road to a more modern house. A porch was added and a wing containing a new kitchen and bedroom. The first house was rented to the Hatches and later sold to the Meyer family in 1913.
About 1922 the second farm was rented out and the family moved to 4815 Forest Avenue, Downers Grove, Illinois. For a short time, Lawrence ran a meat market on Main Street. After his retirement, he enjoyed reading and became active in St. Joseph Church activities. The farm was sold in 1940. Lawrence passed away at his home on September 5, 1941.
