Biography

This profile is part of the Pike Name Study.

Joseph Pike/Pyke was born about 1748 (based on his age at death)

Joseph first signed marriage banns with Ann Lovelock on 7 February 1779, at Tidcombe, Wiltshire, England. They were both listed with a residence of Tidcombe. [1] They subsequently were married by banns on 1 March 1779 at Tidcombe, Wiltshire, England. Ann was listed as a "Minor". Witnesses were Thomas Stockwell and John Young. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] They had (at least) 8 children:

  1. Elizabeth Pike (1780-1794)
  2. Sarah Pike (1781-)
  3. Winefrid Pike (abt.1784-)
  4. Isaac Pike (abt.1787-)
  5. Joseph Pike (1789-1870)
  6. Thomas Pike (1794-1794)
  7. James Pike (1797-)
  8. Leah Pike (abt.1801-)

Note: In transcriptions for his marriage to Ann in 1779, there is variation in the spelling of Pike/Pyke. Whilst the Wiltshire Banns index and Wiltshire Marriages Index use "Pike", the England Marriages 1538-1973 list him as "Pyke".

Joseph died in 1818, aged 70 years, and was buried on 11 Oct 1818 at St Michael Anglican Church, Tidcombe, Wiltshire, England (where his wife, Ann, daughter, Elizabeth, and grand-daughter, Leah, were also buried). [7] [8] [9]

Baptism

Based on his age at death, and the history of the village (thought to have originally been part of the Bedwyn estate) it seems likely that Joseph came to Tidcombe as a worker as part of the construction of the Manor house in 1770, so Joseph was probably born in Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire about 1748. Pike-5935

Joseph was (probably, but uncertain) the son of Joseph Pike, who was baptised on 15 May 1748, at Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire, England. (no mother was recorded) [10] [11]

Tidcombe

Tidcombe village was designated a conservation area in 1975. It is a small village in Wiltshire, England, on the eastern edge of the county, near Hampshire. It is about 9 miles (14 km) southeast of Marlborough and 7 miles (11 km) southwest of Hungerford, Berkshire. With few inhabitants, it forms part of the civil parish of Tidcombe and Fosbury.

The village is small, of about 12 houses, in a hilly area rich in mature trees and reached by a winding lane. The few buildings are widely spaced along the lane. These are principally the Manor (mid to late 18th century, Grade II* listed), the 13th century church with 17th-century tower (Grade II* listed), a 19th century former vicarage and an active farmyard. There is a small former school house and several cottages with various outbuildings. The wooded grounds of the manor, the vicarage house and the churchyard constitute most of the village area. [12] [13] [14]

See Tidcombe for information on Tidcombe and it's history.

Research Notes

Parents: Based on his age at death, and the history of the village (thought to have originally been part of the Bedwyn estate) it seems likely that Joseph came to Tidcombe as a worker as part of the construction of the Manor house in 1770, so Joseph was probably born in Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire about 1748 - it is still speculation that his parents were Joseph Pike & Elizabeth Pike-5935

Family: There were a number of Pikes/Pykes who were baptised or buried at St Michael's Church, Tidcombe (or had stated some association to it) - presumably these are his relatives and provide further support to the speculation that his parents were likely to be Joseph Pike & Elizabeth Pike-5935

  • John Pyke of Titcombe (died 1613): In his will John requested he be buried in the parish church (or churchyard) of Titcombe (Church of St Michael), to which he left twelve pence
  • James Pike, son of Jeffery, was buried on 18 Jun 1682, at the Church of St Michael, Tidcombe.
  • John Pike was buried on 2 Nov 1670 at the Church of St Michael, Tidcombe.
    • His son, Robert Pike was also buried there on 1 Feb 1663 (he was only ~20, and predeceased his father, John)
    • His son, Francis Pike was also buried there on 6 Sep 1665 (he was only ~18, and predeceased his father, John)
    • His son, John Pike was also buried there, on 6 Jul 1685.
  • Thomas Pyke was buried on 6 Oct 1698 at the Church of St Michael, Tidcombe.

Pike-6070 and Pike-2211 do not represent the same person because: Great Bedwyn is 34 miles from Trowbridge, so more information would be required to confirm these are the same person.

Given the history of Tidcombe, its links with Great Bedwyn, and the building of the manor house in 1770, it is likely that Joseph came to Tidcombe as part this workforce, and settled here, marrying in 1779, and starting a family. After his death in 1818, there was probably nothing to keep his family there, given the small population, there would be few opportunities for his growing family - not surprising two of his sons left for Australia in 1840, with their families (16 in total).

The only other Pike/Pyke family I can find in Tidcombe around this time is the family of Thomas Pike who also died in Tidcombe and whose children were born there.

There were two other potential candidates for matching "my" Joseph Pike, born in 1748, but I rejected these, as they seem less likely:

Pike-6070 - born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England

Pike-6069 - born in Broad Chalke, Wiltshire, England

However I have yet to find any conclusive evidence that "my" Joseph Pike was born in Great Bedwin, Wiltshire, England.
