Biography

Boyd was the son of Jollie and Alexander Porterfield. Upon the death of his uncle William Porterfield, he succeeded to the Duchal estate in 1752. He passed away in 1794.[1][2][3]

Education

Boyd (Bodius) Porterfield matriculated from the University of Glasgow on 14 November 1734.[1]

Duchal Estate

Boyd succeeded to the Duchal Estate upon the death of his uncle William Porterfield in 1752.[4]

In a Deed of Entail dated in October 1721 Alexander conveyed the lands of Duchal and others to his eldest son, William, and heirs between him and his wife Julian Steele. The deed was the subject of a court case in 1835 against the eventual successor to Duchall, James Corbett Porterfield. Boyd followed this grant in 1791 that include provisions for his daughter. In 1832 the rights to the daughters was transferred to others cited as Mrs. Jean Patterson and Howden's Trustees. It would appear these would be descendents of Boyd's daughters.[5]

Boyd, and his son Alexander, were among seventeen Gentlemen of Renfrewshire, who met on 22 November 1786 to discuss proposed amendments to the Corn Laws. They were broadly opposed to new import and export regulations that they saw as prejudicial to their interests. They resolved to former a committee to meet with committees on other counties and present their concerns in Edinburgh. The elder Porterfield, Boyd, was named to that committee. [6]

Family

Boyd married Christian Cunningham of Craigends.[7] They had the following children:[3][8]
