Samuel Porterfield was born in 1726 in County Donegal, Ireland. He came to America with his parents and 7 siblings around 1730. The family initially lived in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Samuel moved to Lancaster County and eventually settled in Cumberland County. He passed away in 1789. [1]

Service in the American Revolution

Private Samuel Porterfield Sr. served with Cumberland County Militia, Pennsylvania Militia during the American Revolution.

Samuel served as a private in the Revolutionary War in the Cumberland County Militia. He served under Captain Robert Shannon. [2]

Samuel is one of ten Porterfields recognized as a DAR Patriot (as of October 2022). His son Samuel Porterfield is also recognized as a DAR patriot.[3][4]

Land Records

Tax records of 1779 and 1785 have Samuel in Cumberland, Pennsylvania.[5][6]

And index of a land warrant in Cumberland from 1784 exists.[7] Land Warrants of 224 acres place Samuel in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in 1788.[8]

Death

He died in 1789 and was buried at Atkinson Mills Methodist Cemetery in Atkinson Mills, MIfflin County, Pennsylvania.[9]

Research Notes

There are two separate Samuel Porterfields mentioned in the Pennsylvania Archives Muster Rolls. This one served under Colonel James Dunlap. Samuel's son William married Mary Shannon, daughter of Robert Shannon. The other Samuel, who worked as a horseman, is Samuel's son.
