Alexander was the first son of Robert Porterfield and Isobell Maxwell.[1]
Alexander succeeded to the estate of Porterfield upon his father's death. As he had no heirs, he conveyed the lands of Porterfield to his brother John on 16 August 1540, reserving a life rent for himself. The contract was witnessed by Thomas Sprewill de Coldon (Cowdon) and James Logan. The contract was signed at Raess, Scotland.[2]
