Biography
Allan was the third son of Robert Porterfield and Isobell Maxwell.[1] Allan would have been born before 1515, when his older brother John was born. He died sometime after 1577, which was latest known date of a charter he signed.
He was known as Sir Allan Porterfield, the vicar of Androssan. Alan acquired by purchase or otherwise the lands Blairlin, Bellcroft, Arthurlee, and the vicarage lands of Androssen, also known as Staneley. Between 1567 and 1577, Allan conveyed by charter these lands to his nephew, Gabriel. Alan also lent his brother John money in 1546. The loan was secured against the lands of Porterfield. The deed was signed in Killochries.[2]
In 1554 Allan (he is stylized as Sir Allan Porterfeilde) lived in Paisley or at least possessed land near the abbey as lands adjacent to his were granted to a Quinton Hamiltoun.[3]
In 1555, he was a witness to a sasine in Glasgow.[4]
On 27 October 1555, he was a witness for the distribution of funds of a sasine in Glasgow.[5]
On 29 August 1558, Allan sold to William Spange and Katherine Norvell, his spouse, and l.l. a barn in Glasgow.[6]
Other sources cite a William Porterfield holding the vicarage of Ardrossan in the early 16th century, sometime after 1507.[7]
