Biography

John Porterfield migrated from Ireland to United States.

John, his wife, Catherine Edwards, and children emigrated from Ireland to New York around 1835. By 1837 he was in Maine where he served as a private in the Maine militia in 1837.^[2]

Around 1842, they moved to Caledon in the County of Peel in Ontario.

Porterfield Road runs from Orangeville past Alton to Beech Grove Side Road.

John and Catherine were parents to the following children:

John appears to have passed away on 20 Feb 1848 in Caledon.^[1] His headstone his his name as John Poterfield, though. His last child was born in 1848 and John does not appear in the 1851 Canadian Census with his wife and other children..

Research Notes

This John Porterfield is different from the John Porterfield, the son of Charles Porterfield and Agnes Smith who was from Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Both Ancestry and FamilySearch have presented hints in the past that they should be merged or share some of the same sources.

His birth location is assumed based in children being born in Donegal, Ireland.

Immigration to New York, then to Caledon, Canada is based on reported birth location of children.
