Revolutionary War

Captain Robert Porterfield served with 11th Virginia Regiment (1777), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Robert Porterfield served as a Captain in the Second Regiment of the Virginia Line of the Continental Army in the American Revolution. ^[1]

He was an adjutant of Colonel Daniel Morgan's regiment. Later he was an aide with General William Woodford when they were both taken prisoner at the Siege of Charleston on May 17th, 1780.^[1]

As an officer in the Revolutionary War, he was eligible for, and in 1783 became an original member of the Society of Cincinnati.^[2][3] His membership certificate was sign by George Washington.^[1]

Robert is recognized as a DAR Patriot.^{[4] [5]}

Robert also served in the War of 1812, he was commissioned as Brigadier General of the Militia of Virginia.^[6] He retired as Brigadier General. ^[1]

Move to Virginia

After the American Revolution, he settled in Augusta County, Virginia where he purchased a farm in 1783, which later named "Soldier's Retreat".^[1]
