On June 17, 1778, Simeon Perkins recorded in his diary that William Porterfield, along with John Matthews and Thomas Hayden, reported that they subject to raids by privateers. They petitioned Massachusetts State Council for losses suffered because of privateer raids.[6]

William served in the American Revolutionary War in Captain Pride's Company in the Cumberland County Militia (Maine) from October 1, 1779 to February 15, 1781.[7]
