About the Project

The Kinsman Name Study is also registered with the Guild of One Name Studies.

The Kinsman Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Kinsman name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Kinsman name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Kinsmans), by time period (18th Century Kinsmans), or by topic (Kinsman DNA, Kinsman Occupations, Kinsman Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

How to Join

If so, feel free to add your name to the Membership list below, post an introduction comment on the specific team page, and then dive right in!

Research Pages

Here are some of the current research projects on which we are working. Any help is more than welcome.

• Connecting all the existing Kinsman profiles on wikitree to their equivalent pages on the Kinsman ONS website - the ONS webiste often contains more information than has been copied over into wikitree.
• Seeking new contributors to our Y-DNA program. Getting people to join is not easy, but it can be really rewarding. In this case showing the link between the very large US Kinsman family and the much smaller root family of Kinsman in England.
• Building the at-DNA database of Kinsman descendants. This is very much work in progress and hopefully will help us fill in some gaps in the more recent Kinsman family history where there is a lack of paper records.
• Adding in more paper trail research to expand on the bare bones that are already here.

About the Kinsmans

There are multiple independent origins of the Kinsman name with descendants spread across the world.

The four major origins of Kinsman families are North Cornwall (with several emigrations to Canada); South Cornwall (most emigrations from there went to the USA); Wiltshire (one emigration to America in 1634 but with numerous descendants); and Scotland.
