About the Project

The Leyde Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Leyde/Leyda name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Leyde name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Leyde's), by time period (18th Century Leyde's), or by topic (Leyde DNA, Leyde Occupations, Leyde Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches that have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Migration

One focus of this site is the genealogy of French and Indian War and Revolutionary War veteran John Leyde (1732-1810), his two wives: Arrientje Rosencrans and Maria; and their seven children. It can be confusing because John's surname is shown in contemporary records in at least nine ways, from Leidy in the French and Indian War to Lyde at his first marriage, to Leyda on Revolutionary War records, and Leyde on his tombstone. One thing is consistent, the Leyde/Leyda family members were pioneers who moved across the continent in major family movements as the country was born and expanded:

  • From the British New York and New Jersey Colonies
  • Across Pennsylvania in the 1700s
  • Into Ohio in the early 1800s
  • West to Iowa and Minnesota in the mid-1800's
  • Further West to Washington State in the late 1800s.
