Biography

Jonas Propst lived in Appalachia, in North Carolina. See Appalachia Project.

Jonas (Frederick) Probst was born on June 3, 1819. North Carolina, United States to parents Johannes Propst and Christina Deitz ^[1]

Jonas was baptized at an early age in the Evangelical Lutheran Church. In 1840 he was confirmed as a member in the same church by Rev. Danial Moser. (see obituary)

Jonas worked as a carpenter by trade and stayed in in the Hickory area where he met and married Lovina Hallman on November 24, 1842 in Salisbury, North Carolina. ^[2] (see obituary)

The couple had ten children together. According to his obituary, he had six sons and four daughters. Three of his children predeceased him. Seven were living at the time of his death. (Due to lack of evidence and inconsistencies on various websites there are eight who seem to be consistently connected:

Jonas enlisted with the Confederate Army July 22, 1864 in Salisbury, Rowan, North Carolina. He was assigned to the 5th Regiment, North Carolina Senior Reserves, Company E, with the rank of Private.

Jonas Frederick Propst passed away March 16, 1901 in Catawba County, near Hickory. He died from myocarditis (inflammation of the heart). Jonas was 81 years 9 months and 13 days old. His obituary relays facts of his life. He was buried at Millers Lutheran Church Cemetery in Hickory. A gravestone marks his burial site.^[3]

Notes on Children

Since some children's names have been recently added to websites to Find a Grave Index and others I feel given the parents' ages and lack of information / sourcing, they should be listed but not made "official".

RE: Jesse Probst, age 10 on 1870 census. One research suggests that It is noted that was born when both parents were around 49-53 years of age making it improbable but not impossible that they are the parents. The purpose of is to show due diligence has been taken to show the current info at this stage. She appears on the correct census of 1880 listed as their daughter, age 13 and son Wilburn is below her name.

Unsourced sons "Jessee" and "Robert Ingold Probst" as well as daughter, Emma Jane are now all attached on FamilySearch but with no sources, notes, citations etc. There are also several inconsistencies and improbable scenarios:

For example, Jesse and Robert are listed with birth years of 1860 and 1857 respectively, but nothing else on the profiles. It is the same for Emma Jane and all of it seems odd as we have the Census data with children listed and have been able to work together to pull quite a bit of information for every other child in the family with a quick search, all done online from home.

They could have died very young but their son David didn't see his first birthday and there were still three documents covering birth, baptism and death.

Note - (One research says that it is most likely Jonas was born Catawba, North Carolina but a recently sourced church journal says he was born in S.C. as were his first 5 children. Nothing can give this any credence and the children's baptisms have been found for N.C.)
