Biography

Gurdon Saltonstall...son of Gov. Gordon Saltonstall and Elizabeth Rosewell. He was born the year his father took office.

The Saltonstall family is a Boston Brahmin family from the U.S. state of Massachusetts, notable for having had a family member attend Harvard University from every generation since Nathaniel Saltonstall—later one of the more principled judges at the Salem Witch Trials—graduated in 1659. The family originated in Yorkshire, England, where the name was sometimes spelled Saltingstall. The name originates from the hamlet of Saltonstall in Halifax, West Yorkshire. The meaning is derived from Sal-ton-stall in Old English. The translation being "Farm in the willows".

Gurdon Saltonstall Jr. became the ancestor of all of the Connecticut Saltonstalls so well known in local history.

From the pen of F.G. Saltonstall: "Gurdon Saltonstall, son of Governor Gurdon Saltonstall by his second wife...was graduated from Yale College in 1725. "Mr. Saltonstall was prominent in all the affairs of New London. ... "In the year 1740, war having been declared by England against Spain, Gurdon Saltonstall was promoted to the rank of Colonel of the Militia. In 1744-5 he superintended the raising of troops for the expedition against Cape Breton. "In all the measures relating to the Revolution he took a prominent part." (Mumford Memoirs)

Brig. Gen. Gurdon Saltonstall was 68 years old during the Revolution. In the burning of New London by Benedict Arnold, the valuable homesteads of both General Gurdon Saltonstall and of his father were destroyed.

General Gurdon Saltonstall married Rebekah Winthrop, descendant of John Winthrop, Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630.
