Biography

Job Shippee was born in the unincorporated village of Smithfield, in Providence, Providence County, Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in about 1712, perhaps earlier. He was the son of Solomon Shippee and Elizabeth Hempstead.[1]

He married his first cousin, Rose Shippee, daughter of Thomas Shippee (Job's uncle) and Sarah Place, in Smithfield on 25 Jun 1738.[2] After their marriage they lived in Scituate, in Providence County, where they had four children:

  1. Sarah Shippee (b. 28 Sep 1738, Scituate;[3] m. Joseph Phillips)
  2. Elizabeth Shippee (b. 31 May 1741, Scituate)[4] Note: She is mentioned in her maternal grandfather's will in 1765, however, she is not mentioned in her father's will written in 1783.
  3. Job Shippee (b. 28 Sep 1747, Scituate)[5]
  4. Solomon Shippee (b. 1749)

Rose Shippee died between about 1749 and about 1760, when Job remarried. His second wife was Hannah Williams. Job Shippee helped out with the inventory of the estate of Robert Williams, Hannah's father, in 1759. They had four children:

  1. Willard Shippee (b. 1761, m. 10 Apr 1794, Foster, Rhoda Slater)[6]
  2. Esek Shippee (b. 1762, m. 7 Nov 1787, Foster, Katherine Martin)[7]
  3. David Shippee
  4. Hosea Shippee (b. 1767, m. 14 Jan 1790, Foster, Mary Mitihael)[8]

Job Shippee died on February 20, 1791, in Foster, Providence, Rhode Island, United States. His Will was dated in Foster, Rhode Island on 26 October 1783, and was probated in Foster on 4 April 1791. It mentioned his wife, Hannah, six sons (Solomon, Willard, Esek, David, Hosea, and Job), one daughter, Sarah Phillips (wife of Joseph Phillips) and Sarah's daughter, his granddaughter Rosabella Phillips.[9]

Research Notes

Smithfield, Providence County, Rhode Island: The town of Smithfield was settled in 1660, but, until it was incorporated in 1731, it was part of the town of Providence.[10]

Date of Birth: In the abstract of Solomon Shippee's will found in Austin,[11] Solomon bequeathed: "To son Job, £35. To son Christopher, £35, at age." This would imply that, by December of 1733, when the will was written, Job was at least 21 years old (assuming that 21 was the cut-off age, as it was elsewhere in New England). This would place his birth in 1712 or earlier (or the will would have specified, as it did for the younger son, "at age"). Pending discovery of actual documentation for the date of Job's birth, the data field has been changed to 1712, in preference to 1710 or 1713, as appeared in the two merged profiles.
