Obituaries.
WILLIAM SIGLER was born in Loudon [sic] county, Va., in 1783, and died at his residence in Kingwood, Preston county, W. Va., November 13, 1864. He was “born again” at Knottsville in 1808, and received into the M. E. Church by Rev. Joseph A. Shackleford. He soon after removed to Kingwood, where for fifty 1816years he was a respected citizen, esteemed by all who knew him, and greatly loved by those who knew him best.
He loved the church, and was jealous of her honor. For about forty years he filled with great acceptability the office of class leader. He was also for many years a faithful steward and zealous exhorter. Ever an earnest laborer in the vineyard of the Lord, at the bedside of the sick and dying, in revivals of religion all over the county, his voice could be heard speaking words of cheer and directing penitents to the Friend of sinners. He gave liberally of his limited means to support the institutions of the church. He was the father of Methodism in Kingwood. Long before a house of worship was built his own dwelling was the sanctuary, where many found the Savior and were encouraged in his service. His house was the home of the itinerant. The earlier Methodist ministers shared largely of his hospitality. Daniel Hill, Jas. Painter, Christopher Frey, Thos. Buks, Robt. Boyd, and many in later years, were welcome at his house. He was regular and punctual in his attendance on all the means of grace. His religion was not periodical. It did not change with the tide of popular opinion. Through “evil report and good report,” in adversity and prosperity, it was ever the same––a glorious reality, possessing his entire nature, controlling his whole life. And now that he is gone we deeply feel the loss; but our sorrow is abated by the remembrance of the great blessing of his bright example so long before us for our pattern, and that after a life of labor and sacrifice he has gone to his rest and reward in heaven. He died as only the Christian can die––“without fear of death,” his “whole trust in his blessed Savior.” His death occurred on Sabbath morning at 9 o’clock. Without a struggle or a groan he closed his eyes in death. He has left an aged widow and wide circle of friends, who mourn his absence, but hope to meet him in the land of immortality.
