Biography

This profile is part of the Skinner Name Study.

Benjamin Skinner, a son of Joseph Skinner and Martha Kinne, was baptized on March 7, 1731 in Preston, Connecticut.[1] [2]

He married Millicent St John in 1754

In 1754, he started a settlement in Cochecton New York. In 1762, his family moved to Sussex New Jersey. He spent the war years back in Cochecton aiding the English side by supplying provisions to the Royal army. He joined Butler's rangers in 1777 and took part in some raids. After the war, Benjamin was jailed in Orange County New York.

Benjamin moved his family to Stamford Upper Canada in 1785, where he was considered a United Empire Loyalist and as such was granted land in Stamford and in Beverly Township. His brothers Timothy and Haggai and their families also settled in the Niagara region in the late 1700s Benjamin was involved in several land transactions. [4]

"The first municiple elections (of Stamford) seems to have taken placre in 1793 when the followin officers were elected: Accessors, Benjamin Skinner" [5]


-On 16 May 1798 the Crown granted a patent to Benjamin Skinner for all 100 acres in Lot 148 Stamford Twp. -On 20 May 1799 (Reg 5 Feb 1800) Benjamin Skinner et ux sold to Robert Brooks 100 acres in Lot 148 Stamford Twp. (A18 #165) -On 8 Jul 1799 the Crown granted a patent to Benjamin Skinner for all 100 acres in Lot 142 Stamford Twp. -On 8 Jul 1799 the Crown granted a patent to Benjamin Skinner for all 100 acres in Lot 147 Stamford Twp. -On 24 Mar 1801 (Reg 28 Apr 1806) Benjamin Skinner et ux and Milicent his wife sold to Ebenezer Skinner 92 acres in the west end of Lots 142 and 147 Stamford Twp. beginning at the northwest angle of Lot 142 thence east 22 chains 72 links (A121 #4064)


Benjamin died in 1801 in Stamford Township, Welland, Ontario, Canada and was buried in Doan's Ridge Cemetery, Welland, Niagara Regional Municipality, Ontario, Canada [6]
