Biography

Jacob Soule, son of Nathaniel Soule and Rose (Thorn) Soule, was born about 1687. His parents lived in Dartmouth.[1]

He married Rebeckah Gifford Jan 22, 179 [page torn 1709?/10], in Dartmouth.[2]

The lands of Nathaniel Soule and descendants were on the east side of Main Road in present Westport, which was set off from Dartmouth in 1787, and ran down to the east branch of the Accaxet or Westport River.[3]

Although not a Quaker, he triggered controversy in the Quaker community in 1730.[4] He appeared at the Dartmouth monthly meeting and complained that the local Quaker George Soule had gotten his daughter pregnant and then left town.[4] A committee was formed to investigate and conduct hearings with those involved.[4] After several months of being unable to reach a decision, the committee took the unusual step of deciding by majority, rather than consensus.[4] It decided that George's father Nathan Soule was to blame for being instrumental and encouraging in his son's absence.[4] Nathan refused to acknowledge any wrongdoing.[4] He was subsequently disowned by the monthly meeting.[4] The identity of the daughter or child are not known.

Jacob died between August 1747 (will dated) 3 May 1748 (will proved) at Dartmouth.[1][5][6]

His will, dated Dartmouth 12 August 1747, proved 3 May 1748, named sons Stephen, Joseph, Nathaniel and Benjamin, daughters Elizabeth Tripp and Rosamond Potter, and grandchildren Phebe and Jeremiah Wait. He gave son Stephen the west end of his homestead farm, son Joseph land on the south side of the farm and all buildings, son Nathaniel the middlemost lot that butts on the river, etc., son Benjamin land on the north side of that given to Nathaniel, being all the remaining part. To the daughters the indoor moveables. Son Joseph was named executor, witnesses were Silvanus Soule, James Soule and Mary Soule.[7][1][1]

The inventory was presented 2 Mar 1747/8.[1] His wife was not named implying her previous decease.
