Hi Geoff & others. I have a specific interest in the keelmen of South Yorkshire who worked the waters between the coalfields outside Sheffield, and Hull, transporting South Yorkshire coal to the port of Hull, and bringing back iron ore to the factories of Sheffield. I've only recently discovered that my maternal grandmother came from this tradition, and want to discover as much as I can about the lives they lived.

Hi Geoff, I'm interested in focussing on documenting lock-keepers as I have them in my English family. I shall probably start with some of the locks along the Thames, including Teddington. Hope this helps, Susie :-)

Hello Geoff

is this where you meant us to post answers to your message? Sorry still learning how WT works! If we are to document who lived and worked on the waterways do we need to include counties in the categories? E.g. I know that canal boat folk had their babes christened at Calveley chapel in Cheshire from when chapel was bult in 1850s but the current categories would not capture that? thanks

Hello Geoff

I'm interested please though some of my ancestors were water gypsies on the Grand canal in Ireland. I live close to the Shropshire union canal and have holidayed several times on barges.

Hello Geoff!

I have an interest in some of our canals and waterways. My 3* great grandfather William Lund(e) , Lund-1047, BIRTH 26 MAR 1738 • Rowley, Yorkshire, England was Lock Keeper on the Market Weighton Canal in Faxfleet, Yorkshire at the point where it joins the Humber ' Weighton Lock ' when my 2* great grandmother Harriet Lund, Lund-1048 , was born there 12 Jul 1806 .
