Alexander Norwich Tayler was born at 11.40 am on Monday the 11th July 1870 at Rothiemay House, Banffshire, Scotland. He was the third child and first son, born to William Tayler of Glenbarry and Georgiana Duff[1], second daughter of Norwich and Helen Duff, nee Shoolbred. [2]
Alexander Tayler, better known as Alistair, and his sister Helen, better known as Hetty, were Historical Writers, and specialized in 17th and 18th century British History, especially, the Jacobite Wars, which fascinated them both. The siblings worked as a team, to record the history and activities of the Jacobites in Scotland during the 18th century, and their work, noted for its quality, has remained an invaluable source of historical information on some of the most important figures in Scottish history.
Alistair and Hetty Tayler were co-authors of the penultimate Duff Family History resource, The Book of the Duffs, in 1914, and, considering the unavailability of Computers, compiling all the information on the family, was a mammoth task in itself.
While researching The Book of the Duffs, Alistair became interested in the Urquhart Family, so, began collecting material on that family and was always adding to it. He and Hetty copied all the interesting Urquhart papers at Meldrum House just before 1914, and Alistair made Hetty promise to finish the research and publish The History of the Family of Urquhart should he be unable to do so.[3]
Alexander Norwich Tayler never married and passed away, suddenly, in London, England, on Monday the 8th November 1937.[4]
