Biography

Mary was born about 1830. She is the daughter of John Tombs and Catherine Weems. She married James Reison Goad in 1849 and they were parents of seven children, five of whom are known.

Mary married James R Goad on 28 July 1849 in Maury, Tennessee, United States.[1].[2]

In the 1850 census, Mary (age 20) was in Maury, Tennessee, United States.[3]

In the 1860 census, Mary (age 30) was at 6th District, Maury, Tennessee, United States.[4]

Mary was in a military record in 1891-1965 in Maury, Tennessee, United States.[5]

In the 1900 census, Mary (age 70) was the widowed mother-in-law of Jordon Y Clement in Civil District 19, Maury, Tennessee, United States.[6]

In the 1910 census, Mary (age 79) was the widowed mother of James F Goad in Civil District 16, Dyer, Tennessee, United States.[7]

Polly's son William Ira Good died on 17 February 1921 in Childress, Childress, Texas, United States.[8]

Toombs' daughter Nannie Watson died in 1926 in Maury, Tennessee, United States.[9]

After the death of James in 1861, she remained unmarried, living in Maury County with her children. In 1906, Mary applied for a Confederate Widow’s Pension.

Mary is said to have died in 1912, but the source for that date is unknown at this time.

Ira Huckaby wrote on 29 Feb 1992 on a piece of paper formerly in my possession that his great-grandmother was S.M. Tooms born in 1826 and died on Nov 11, 1908; however, it seems he confused the first names of two of his great-grandparents - Mary Ann (Tombs) Goad (abt.1830-) and Sarah M (Walker) Scott (1828-1908)

The death date from the “Sarah M Tooms” merge is wrong. Mary’s death was after 1910 based upon the 1910 Census.

Tooms-38 and Tombs-298 appear to represent the same person because: Merging Tooms-38 to Tombs-298 is the only way to delete Tooms-38. Tombs-298 seems to be correct. Tooms-38 was errantly created based on a confusion of two individuals. It most closely matches Tombs-298. If not merged, Tooms-38 will remain an unconnected profile
