He was born on 28 Jul 1516 in Düsseldorf, Duchy of Berg and was the only son of Maria (Jülich-Berg) and Johann Kleve or Cleves.
Upon his father's death in 1539, Wilhelm succeeded his father as Duke and took over rule of his estates (the Duchy of Cleves and the County of Mark). Despite his mother having lived until 1543, William also became the Count of Ravenstein and the Duke of Berg and Jülich from 1539 to 1592.
In 1540 he arranged the marriage of his sister, Anne of Cleves, with Henry VIII of England, who were married on 06 Jan 1540/41 at the Palace of Placentia in Greenwich, London, England.
Wilhelm first married on 14 Jul 1541 in Paris, Seine, France to Jeanne d'Albret, the 13 year old daugther and heir of Henri II of Navarra. The marriage was never consumated and it was anulled on 22 October 1545.
In 1546 Wilhelm married Maria of Habsburg (1531-1581) who bore him 7 children.
Wilhelm married secondly on 18 Jul 1546 to Maria Habsburg.
He died on 05 Jan 1592 in Düsseldorf, Duchy of Berg (now Düsseldorf, Sadtkreis Dusseldorf, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany) and was buried in the Stiftskirche St. Lambertus in Düsseldorf.[1] [2]
