Biography

Hugh Wrottesley was born in Staffordshire, England.

Hugh Wrottesley was the son of Sir John Wrottesley, 8th Bt. and Frances Courtenay, daughter of William Courtenay Viscount of Powderham and Frances Heneage. He was born on 23 July 1782 and baptised on 24 July 1782 in Tettenhall, Staffordshire.^[1]

He joined the 4th Native Regiment of the East India Company as Ensign and was promoted to Lieutenant in August 1801.^[2] He was subsequently promoted to Captain, Major and finally Lieutenant Colonel in the Bengal Infantry.

Sometime before 1811 he married Emma (unknown);^[3] their children included:

1. Female Wrottesley born 18 August 1812 The lady of Lieut. Wrottesley, 21st regt., N.I., of a daughter, at Barrackpore.^[4]
2. Child Wrottesley born 31 October 1813 at Bengal The lady of Lieut. H. Wrottesley, (21st regt. N.I.) of a still born child.^[4]

Lieutenant Colonel Hugh Wrottesley died in Allahabad, Bengal, India on 18 October 1830.^[8]

1. His widow, Emma (Unknown) Wrottesley, was born on 25 February 1796 and died (age 68 years) at 1 Bedford Square, London on 25 February 1864.^{[3] [9]}
2. The son born 20 September 1819 was possibly Hugh E Wrottesley, who on 1857 married Isabella E Evans in Bengal.^[10]
