Biography

Mary Ann Wycherley was born in 1843 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England to Martha Wycherley. Her birth was registered in Shrewsbury in the second quarter of the year, with no mother's maiden name (indicating an unmarried mother).^[1]

Mary Ann Wycherley, daughter of Martha, was christened on 30 Apr 1843 in Shrewsbury.^[2]

In 1851 Mary Wycherley (age 8, Scholar) lived at St Michaels Street in St Mary Shrewsbury with her grandmother Ellen (75), mother Martha (38, House Servant), and brother John (16, Thread Parter at Factory).^[3]

Mary's mother was in a relationship with Richard Meyrick from at least 1861 to 1871, though they didn't actually marry. Mary was listed as Richard's daughter on the 1861 census (though they were all transcribed with the surname Wycherley).

In 1861 Mary Wycherley (age 18, Thread Winder) lived at Roushill Bank in Shrewsbury St Chad with her stepfather Richard (39, Carpenter) and mother Martha (47, Carpenters Wife).^[4]

Mary Anne Wycherley married Samuel Harley in 1863. The marriage was registered in Shrewsbury in the second quarter of the year.^[5]

• Another granddaughter lived with them in 1911 (Eliza Harley (1899-)), but she was the legitimate child of their son Samuel and his wife Sarah Ann (nee Symonds), and so was probably just visiting them.

In 1881 Mary Ann Harley (age 37) lived in Shrewsbury St Mary with her husband Saml (41, Brickmaker) and three children: Mary Ann (17), Saml (6, Scholar), and John (4, Scholar), as well as her mother Martha Wytcherley (68).^[7]

In 1891 Mary A Harley (age 47) lived at East Terrace in Shrewsbury with her husband Samuel (52, Gas Stoker), five children: Mary A (27), Samuel (16, Silver Polisher), John (14, Errand Boy), Maud (8), and Christopher (7), granddaughter Isabella (2), grandson Percy E (1), and mother Martha Wycherley (78).^[8]

In 1901 Mary Ann Harley (age 56) lived at Severn Street in Shrewsbury St Mary with her husband Samuel (62, Gas Works Stoker), three children: Mary Ann (37, Charwoman), Maud Beatris (18), and Charley (17, Riveters Labourer), granddaughter Bella (12), grandson Perry (11), and two others: Samuel Fox (19, Iron Moulder) and Arthur Roansevell (21, Iron Moulder).^[9]

In 1911 Mary Ann Harley (age 67) lived in Shrewsbury St Mary with her husband Samuel (72, Labourer Gasworks), daughter Maud (28), and four grandchildren: Isbella (22, Cigarette Maker Tobacco Factory), Percy (21, Painter Asst Tobacco Factory), Eliza (11, School), and Violet (2).^[10]

Mary's husband Samuel Harley passed away in 1912, aged 73 years. His death was registered in Atcham, Shropshire [the RD for Shrewsbury from 1871 to 1935] in the last quarter of the year.^[11]

Mary A Harley passed away in 1919, aged 75 years. Her death was registered in Atcham in the first quarter of the year.^[12]
