Biography

Philip le Despenser, Knt., was the younger son of Hugh le Despenser, Knt., Earl of Winchester, and Isabel de Beauchamp.[1][2][3][4] His birthdate is unknown, but he was a minor when his father gave him the manors of Parlington, Yorkshire and Alkborough, Lincolnshire by letters patent dated 12 June 1294.[3][5] His place of birth is also unknown.

Philip married Margaret de Goushill (born 1294), daughter and heiress of Ralph de Goushill and his wife Hawise, daughter of Fulk FitzWarin.[1] They were married some time before 29 June 1308, when livery of her late father's lands was given to the couple.[6] Through Margaret's inheritance, Philip held lands in Goxhill and Gedney, Lincolnshire and others.[1][7] The couple had one son:

  • Philip, Knt., born 6 April 1313, died August 1349, married Joan de Cobham and had issue[1]

Philip died on or before 24 September 1313,[1] the date of the writ for his Inquistion Post Mortem. His heir was his son Philip,[7] who was an infant.

His widow married second by April 1314 to John de Roos (or Ros), Knt., of Watton, Norfolk. They had no issue. Margaret died 29 July 1349.[1]
