Biography

Birth

Katherine Griffin was the daughter of Nicholas Griffin, Esq., of Braybrook, Northamptonshire, and Katherine Curzon.^[1][2][3][4] Katherine's date and place of birth are unknown. Her parents were married about 1453, her mother was still living in July 1465 and her father remarried by October 1471,^[5] so she was born sometime between 1453 and 1471. The Visitations of Northamptonshire state Katherine was their second daughter.^[6]

Marriages and Children

Katherine married first after 1470 to John Bellers, Esq., son and heir of John Bellers, Esq., and Elizabeth Sutton, as his second wife. There were no children from this marriage. John Bellers died 27 January 1475/6.^[1][2]

Katherine married secondly, as his first wife, Sir John Digby, third son of Everard Digby, Esq., and Jacquet Ellis (or Elles).^[1][2] John and Katherine had four sons and four daughters:

• William, Esq., son and heir, married Rose Perwyche and Ellen (or Helen) Roper and had issue^[1][2][3]
• Simon,^[1][2] died 1560, married Catherine Clapham^[3]
• Rowland,^[1][2] died 1546, rector of Barrowden, Rutland^[3]
• Everard,^[1][2] succeeded his brother as rector of Barrowden^[3]
• Anne, wife of Sir William Skeffington^[1][2][3]
• Elizabeth, wife of Humphrey Hercy, Esq.,^[1][2] with whom she had issue^[3]
• Alice, wife of George Ashby, Esq.^[1][2][3]
• Dorothy, wife of a Mr. Brokesby, Esq.^[1][2][3]

Death

Katherine Griffin died before 24 October 1517 when John Digby married a second time to Sanche Willoughby.^[1][2] Sir John Digby died in May 1533. He was buried at Melton-Mowbray, Leicestershire. He left a will dated 1 August 1529, codified 19 May 1533 and proved 30 October 1546.^[1][2]
