General Lorenzo Thomas wrote a letter to Colonel John Munroe April 1860 to introduce an "artist of merit" William Jacob Hays. He made a trip to the west during the summer of 1860. Hays lived from 1830 - 1875. https://americangallery.wordpress.com/2010/12/18/william-jacob-hays-1830-1875/
