When the Mexican War was under way in 1846, companies C, E, G, and K of the 1st Regiment (Infantry), under Lieutenant Colonel Henry Wilson, joined General Zachary Taylor’s forces in Northern Mexico and took part in the Battle of Monterrey. When General Winfield Scott called upon regular units in the wake of the invasion off the coast, a battalion from this regiment was sent off and made an active participant in the Siege of Veracruz. From there, this same battalion presided over as the garrison of the city till the end of the war.
