Acadians settled the village of Les Planches as early as 1672. The British renamed the site Amherst during the Seven Years' War (1756 - 1763), and established a settlement in 1764.
At the time of Confederation, on July 1, 1867, Amherst was the county seat of Cumberland County, Nova Scotia
