History
Camp Groce (aka Camp Liendo)was originally an instruction camp for Confederate recruits. Beginning in 1863 it was used as a prison camp for Union soldiers who had been captured in the Battles of Galveston and Sabine Pass. At its height, Camp Groce housed approximately 1100 soldiers and sailors.
