Canso was originally a seasonal camp for the Mi'kmaq. By 1604 French and Basque sailors began to trade there with the Mi'kmaq and each other. It was an Acadian fishing base and a salt-cod processing station, with no permanent settlement.

When Nova Scotia Colony was formed, New England fishermen and merchants established the town of Canso, and the British established a garrison. The town was destroyed in 1744, and used as a base from which to launch the siege of Louisboug. It was re-established by New England Planters in 1760. Historical details are found in Wikipedia, The Canadian Encyclopedia, and the Nova Scotia Archives

At the time of Confederation, on July 1, 1867, Canso was a community in Guysborough County
