Department of Tennessee and Georgia was established August 15, 1864. Defined commencing at the southwestern boundary between Georgia and Florida on the Apalachicola River; thence along the Chattahoochee River north, and following the boundary line between Georgia and Alabama to Tennessee River. On Apr 19, 1865 it merged into the Department of East Tennessee and Southwestern Virginia.

Commanded by: General J B Hood, August 15, 1864; relieved at own request January 23, 1865. Lieutenant General R Taylor, assumed January 23, 1865. General J E Johnston, assigned to the two military departments known as the Department of Tennessee and Georgia and the Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, and the troops therein, etc., February 22, 1865; assumed February 25, 1865. Major-General Howell Cobb, assigned March 27, 1865.
