The authority is Sanders, English Baronies, p.136. This was one of the baronies which evolved from the holdings of Robert Count of Mortain, whose son William lost the family inheritance as a rebel. In this specific barony, the lands went to a cousin Gilbert de l'Aigle. However during the strategic importance of the fee probably played a role in its subsequent history. It eventually became a royal fief.
